How to Replace a Key Fob Battery (Any Brand)

Before assuming your fob has failed, replace the battery — a weak cell is the most common cause of short range, intermittent buttons, and push-to-start detection issues.

Which battery do I need?

Most fobs use a coin cell: CR2032 (most common smart/flip keys), CR2025, or CR1620 (many remote-head keys). The size is printed on the old battery. Our product listings note the exact battery for each fob.

How to replace it

  1. Slide out the emergency/mechanical blade if present — this usually reveals the seam.
  2. Gently pry the fob halves apart at the seam with a flat tool; avoid prying near the buttons or board.
  3. Note the orientation (+ side up, usually), pop the old cell, insert the new one.
  4. Snap the case shut and test all buttons.

Still not working after a new battery?

If buttons still misbehave, the issue may be the fob or the vehicle receiver — see our programming guide and pillar resource, the complete key fob guide. Need a replacement? Shop your make's collection.

FAQ

Will I have to reprogram after a battery change? No — changing the battery does not erase programming.

Why does my push-to-start say 'key not detected' with a new battery? Verify battery orientation and brand; weak off-brand cells often read low under load.
