Land Rover, a symbol of rugged British engineering and luxury off-roading, was born in 1948 when the Rover Company introduced the original Land Rover Series I, inspired by military Jeeps and designed for both farming and utility use. Built with a lightweight aluminum body due to post-war steel shortages, the Land Rover quickly gained a reputation for durability and go-anywhere capability. Through the 1950s and ’60s, it became a global icon, used by explorers, militaries, and adventurers alike. In 1970, the launch of the Range Rover redefined the brand by blending off-road toughness with luxury, pioneering what we now know as the modern SUV. Over the years, Land Rover changed hands multiple times—first under British Leyland, then BMW, and later Ford, which grouped it with Jaguar. In 2008, both brands were sold to Tata Motors of India, which formed Jaguar Land Rover (JLR). Under Tata’s ownership, Land Rover expanded its lineup to include models like the Discovery, Evoque, and Defender (relaunched in 2020), while maintaining its reputation for premium craftsmanship and off-road capability. Today, Land Rover is globally recognized for producing high-end SUVs that combine luxury, advanced technology, and legendary 4x4 performance.
