Older Buicks (1990s — Century, Regal, Riviera, Skylark)
Buick GM metal key blank

1990s · Metal Key No programming

These older Buicks use a plain metal key — no chip, no programming. Just have it cut to match your lock and you’re set.

Keyless-entry remote (2008–2010) — do it yourself

These Enclaves learn their remotes right from the dash — no tools, about 5 minutes. Have every remote you want working with you (existing plus new), because the relearn clears the old ones — program them all in this one session. Pick the method that matches your dash.

If your radio has a display screen (DISP button)

  1. Insert the key and turn the ignition to ON/ACC — just shy of cranking the engine.
  2. Press and hold the DISP button on the radio for 5–10 seconds, until the settings menu appears.
  3. Press SEEK up or down until “FOB PROG” shows on the display.
  4. Press PREV or NEXT to open the sub-menu — it will read “BEGIN.”
  5. Press DISP to enter programming mode.
  6. When “PUSH FOB” appears, press and hold LOCK and UNLOCK together for 15 seconds on the first remote. The vehicle chimes to confirm.
  7. Repeat for every remote you want to use, including your existing ones.
  8. Scroll until “EXIT” shows and press DISP to finish — the vehicle chimes again. Test every button.

If your dash has no display screen (trip-odometer button)

  1. Insert the key and turn the ignition to ON/ACC — just shy of cranking.
  2. Press the Trip Odometer Reset button until “RELEARN REMOTE KEY” is displayed.
  3. Press and hold the Trip Odometer Reset button for 3 seconds, until “REMOTE KEY LEARNING ACTIVE” shows — you’re now in programming mode.
  4. Press and hold LOCK and UNLOCK together for 15 seconds on the first remote. The vehicle chimes to confirm.
  5. Repeat for any additional remotes, including your existing ones.
  6. Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key to exit. Test every button.

2011–2016 Enclave: this remote isn’t self-programmable — a local automotive locksmith can program it for you, still far cheaper than the dealership.

Push-to-start smart key — do it yourself

Your Buick has the relearn built in. You’ll need the new key’s emergency blade cut to your car first (any shop can do it). Then pick the path that fits your situation.

If you have two working smart keys (about 10 minutes)

  1. Place both working smart keys in the cupholder.
  2. On the driver’s door, pop off the lock-cylinder cap to the right of the handle — slip the door key into the slot underneath and lift the cover off.
  3. Insert the new key’s cut emergency blade into that lock and turn to UNLOCK five times within 10 seconds. The dash will read “Ready for Remote #3.”
  4. Lift the tray and rubber mat in the center console and set the new key in the transmitter pocket. Press ENGINE START/STOP — the dash confirms when it’s learned.
  5. Take the key out and press LOCK or UNLOCK to finalize. Hold START/STOP for 12 seconds to exit, then test.

If all your keys are lost (about 30 minutes, no tools)

  1. Pop the driver’s-door lock cap as above, insert the cut emergency blade, and turn to UNLOCK five times within 10 seconds. The dash reads “Remote Learn Pending, Please Wait.”
  2. Wait 10 minutes until the dash says “Press Start Button to Learn,” then press START/STOP. Repeat that wait-and-press three times total — the car is making sure no one’s stealing it.
  3. After the third round the dash reads “Ready for Remote #1.” Set the key in the transmitter pocket, press START/STOP, then press LOCK or UNLOCK to finalize. Hold START/STOP 12 seconds to exit, and test.

Flip key & chipped key — do it yourself

Buick’s immobilizer relearn is built into the car — no tools either way. Add a spare in minutes if you have a working key, or do the timed relearn if you’re starting from scratch.

Adding a spare (you have one working key — about 5 minutes)

  1. Insert your working key and turn to ON/RUN (just short of cranking the engine).
  2. Turn back to OFF/LOCK and remove the key.
  3. Within 5 seconds, insert the new key and turn to ON/RUN. The security light goes out — that’s it programmed.
  4. Remove the key to finish. Repeat for any other keys, then test.

All keys lost (no working key — about 30 minutes)

  1. Insert your new cut key and turn to ON/RUN (don’t crank the engine). The security/immobilizer light comes on.
  2. Leave it in ON and wait about 10 minutes, until the security light turns off.
  3. Turn the key OFF for about 5 seconds.
  4. Repeat that ON → 10-minute wait → OFF cycle three times total (about 30 minutes) — the car relearns the key on the third pass.
  5. After the third cycle, start the engine to confirm, then test the key.
