Add a key yourself — with two working keys
Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep let you add a key at home only if you already have two keys that start the car — no tools. Your new key’s blade must be cut to your vehicle first (any shop can do it). If you have fewer than two working keys, the car needs an automotive key professional with the security PIN.
- Insert the first working key, turn to ON/RUN (engine off) for about 3 seconds, then turn off and remove it.
- Within 15 seconds, insert the second working key and turn to ON/RUN. Leave it on for about 10 seconds until you hear a single chime, then turn off and remove it.
- Within 60 seconds, insert the new key and turn to ON/RUN. A chime confirms it’s programmed.
- Turn off, then start the engine with the new key to confirm. Repeat for any additional keys.
For plain keyless remotes (no chip), the remote buttons sync onboard separately. Steps below.

Keyless-entry remote — program it yourself
These 1998–2006 Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep keyless remotes learn onboard in about 2 minutes, no tools. You need one remote that already works on the vehicle. (This is for the separate keyless remote; a key with a chip that starts the car is a different procedure.)
- Get in and close all the doors.
- Put the key in the ignition and turn it to ON — don’t start the engine.
- On the working remote, press and hold UNLOCK for 4–10 seconds. While still holding UNLOCK, press PANIC, then let go of both. A chime means it’s in programming mode.
- Within 30 seconds, press any button on each remote you want to use — including the original. Each one chimes when it’s learned.
- Turn the ignition OFF and test every remote.
No working remote? It needs a programmer — find an independent locksmith near you.
