Ford Key Programming

Good news for Ford owners — most Ford keys you can program yourself. Plain keyless remotes sync onboard; chip keys, remote-head keys, flip keys, and even push-to-start smart keys can be added at home if you already have two working keys (no tools). All keys lost needs an automotive locksmith. Find your model below.

Add a key yourself — with two working keys

Ford lets you add a key at home only if you already have two keys (or two smart fobs) that start the car — no tools. A new bladed key must be cut to your vehicle first (any shop can do it). If you have fewer than two working keys, the car needs an automotive locksmith with the security code.

  1. Insert the first working key and turn to ON/RUN (engine off). Leave it on about 3 seconds, then turn off and remove it. (Smart key: press START/STOP once without your foot on the brake.)
  2. Within 10 seconds, insert the second working key, turn to ON/RUN for about 3 seconds, then turn off and remove it. (Smart key: press START/STOP again.)
  3. Within 10 seconds, insert the new key and turn to ON/RUN (or press START/STOP with the new smart key). The security light blinks then turns off to confirm.
  4. Turn off and start the engine with the new key to confirm. Repeat for any additional keys.

Exact timing varies by year — message us your vehicle and we’ll send the precise sequence. Plain keyless remotes (no chip) sync separately.

Keyless-entry remote — do it yourself

Ford, Lincoln and Mercury all use the same onboard method — no tools, about 5 minutes. Have every remote you want working with you (old and new); programming clears the saved ones, so do them all in one session. Keep your foot off the brake pedal the entire time.

  1. Close all doors, then open the driver’s door and press the Unlock button on the driver’s door panel.
  2. Insert the key into the ignition.
  3. Cycle the key from OFF to RUN (the position just before the engine starts) 8 times within 10 seconds — the 8th turn ending in RUN. The door locks cycle (lock/unlock) to confirm the vehicle is in programming mode.
  4. Within 20 seconds, press any button on the first remote. The locks cycle again to confirm the code was accepted.
  5. Within 20 seconds, press any button on your next remote. Repeat for any additional remotes you want to sync.
  6. Turn the ignition OFF and test every remote.
